I hate shift work... I wish i could do this as much as i use to ...
Relatively light winds (20-25 knots) but caught it at a great tide and wind angle so the swell was running straight and smoooooth.

    POV..Im a steerer..this was good to watch. I consider my steering not too bad, but my right poke is weird to everyone else..I dont know why i started the habit as I do know how to paddle as well. So when I right poke I dont change over. I stay with my right arm/hand in same position as left poke. It works fine..no tippy tippy... been trying to break the habit of change over to left arm..wtf.. but your videos are really. TY.

    Do you think ,like advises Hypr Ian Foo, a 12’6” is even faster than a 14’ in downwind because much easier to turn and keep the right direction in the surfs?I paddle in all conditions but I want to buy a HYPR 14’ x 26” racer to be as fast as possible on long distances. Ian tells me the 12’6”x 27”will be more versatile and even faster downwind. If a 12’6’’ was faster why using 14’ and unlimited in long distance downwind then?

    Hello, thanks for the video. I am like you, but just starting now...How many hours before being able to go upwind? And then how many hours before being able to foil on a straight line?

    • @tbarcode
      @tbarcode 2 года назад

      I was lucky I had a very basic grounding in windsurfing, so staying upwind wasn't too bad. But it took me about a year after that to be up foiling... But that was also only going out maybe an hour or two every 2-3 weeks. After struggling for a long time it all clicked when my mates took me for a tow foil, which was a game changer. If i was to do it again, I'd have definitely paid for an hour of tow foiling before trying to wing and foil, would have saved me hours of failure ! Learn from my mistake haha

    Nice video - that looks like so much fun! Do you have any beginner gear recommendations for someone looking to get into this sport (brands and sizes of wings/boards foils)? I'm about 75 kg, and would love to try this...but I'm 41 years old, so time is not necessarily on my side> I think my kids would love this too when they get a bit older.

    • @tbarcode
      @tbarcode 2 года назад

      It's a great sport because it is so low impact so you can do it well into old age, i'm only 5 years off you my friend :P If you're not sure definitely hire gear and get lessons, just to see if it is something you'll take to. Once you've made your mind up get everything second hand - big wings, big foils and big boards and sail in low wind. You'll just need your first lot of gear to learn to foil and then you'll be upgrading pretty fast after that. I love the PPC wing but anything with a big leading edge i quite like personally. Axis and armstrong do very nice (but pricey) foils, naish foils are a good alternative and more affordable -what i use. For boards anything you can stand on really. Look for one that is your body weight +40L as a general rule and get a wing foil specific board - not a modified supsurf etc. that pink board you see me on in my other videos was a surf sup with a foil box put in... Made it 100x harder to learn! Lesson first though - make sure you like it, especially if you haven't done windsport before this (like me!) Good luck! :)

    Nice!!!! Steering is a feel thing which comes with experience. One point you hit spot on, when poking, hold for 2 - 3 strokes and see what the canoe does. Friction and drag is created the longer the steersman is poking. What I have done with novice steersman is have them sit in 6 and watch me (or another steersman) in 5 control the canoe and have them try to mimic my actions. Poke, paddle, j-stroke, draws, etc. When they are getting the hang of it, we switch places. This way when I give advice, they should have a visual of what is expected. Then, we switch again and have them steer from 6. Ironically, from the title, I thought it was going to be a huli drill =)

    • @tbarcode

      Yaaaa, i totally agree. You can teach them the moves then it's just sitting there and doing it hey. It really does become an extension of you. Also that's really clever doing it from seat 5! I'll have to give that a try too , such a good method! :D

    Is maori bay good for beginner sup surfing?

      Hey there, as always it depends on the size... For the most part I'd say no, as even on waist high waves the faces are relatively steep and fast (unless you are still learning in white water). I'd recommend going to Waipu (or those beaches up north), Tarawhanui and Orewa, the latter needs a lot of swell to get any size but worth it when it comes around :) Good luck!

      @@tbarcode thanks for that! why did you opt for longboard sup and not shortboard? I’m currently on this dilemma. Thanks in advance!

      @@thomasedison2806 I ended up dropping the short board because it's easier to paddle out on a normal shortboard than a sup just because the paddle is something else you need to manage - more so if you surf off beach breaks and not point breaks though. I LOVE my SUP longboard because i love walking the board (check out my DW vids where i get more stoke cross-stepping than catching big bumps lol) plus I can paddle it out faster through surf than a short one so i never feel like I get caught between sets. In big waves (head and a half) it's fast and rides like a gun so for the most part size doesn't matter. I just find it more versatile than anything. I can catch many different waves with that 1 board. With my short i was just finding on smaller days or messy days the low wave count got me more frustrated. In the end though it's always what you find the most fun and want out of it (most generic advice ever right). Seriously though, try lots of boards,- use your friends' or demo demo demo ;)

      @@tbarcode thanks mate, just got a shortboard-like and found myself more busy balancing on it & falling on choppy water than catching waves. ill give it more time and see from there. wavecount was zero. next try is longboard.
